A funny, distinctive, constantly clever genre-bending supernatural crime novel' - Bookseller You may also be interested in. The exploits of Clare and Sophie as they try to solve this mystery form the backbone of the story but the characters and the dialogue are as much fun as the plot.

Sam Blake A really unique concept paired with whip-smart writing and lots of heart -- Heather Darwent, author of The Things We Do to Our Friends A clever and playful contemporary cosy mystery by Cobh-based debut author, the talented Alice Bell. Add to this a truly dysfunctional family with some of the most entertaining ‘love to hate them’ characters I have read and you have a real page turner. They feel compelled to investigate as the ghost of the victim is in a sorry way and needs to be laid to rest properly. The events of the book kick off when Claire is booked for the 80th birthday of the matriarch of a posh and rich old English family when she runs into an old college acquaintance.By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file. Figgy has asked her to provide the 'entertainment' at her grandmother's birthday party as Claire works as a medium so a paid séance is in the offing. At first I thought it was an interesting (but not unique premise) Claire being a young woman whose best friend, Sophie, disappeared at the age of 17 and then reappeared as a spirit. So, commences an unusual murder mystery in which they not only have to discover whodunnit but also uncover the identity of the victim from a list of guests who attended a party the previous year.

The only part she was good at was that she could genuinely see and talk to dead people, but as it turned out, that bit was the least important. This isn't going to be one of those series where all the characters are static and do the same things book after book, never changing. Perfect for fans of BBC's Ghosts, Alice Bell has a keen eye for characterisation and the ridiculous, creating a story that will both send chills down your spine and wrap you up in a hug . It's definitely more of a cosy mystery but with some dark elements, like Sophie, the ghost who knows she was murdered but doesn't remember the how/why/who and whose body has never been discovered. When the hunt for the murderer starts in earnest though, it seems that the mystery takes a back-burner.Claire and Sophie are both clearly aware that they're not really good for each other anymore, but they still love each other, and neither of them can let the other go.
