About this deal

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance reader copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review*.

I also feel like the story was one note. It could have been a better experience for me had it been even more campy. That may sounds strange, but I would have enjoyed some humor, or even just more witty banter. Because of the speed, it didn't leave much time for development, both of plot, or character. It's a short book, and because of this, it ended up feeling very surface level. I could have done with more substance all around. To conclude: You should totally read this if you like horror! Or young adult! Or if you dream about sleeping in a cabin in the woods that may or may not end up being your doom! Cheers.

About Kalynn Bayron

If you love horror, you're going to adore this. If horror isn't something you typically read, I think You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight is a great introduction to the genre, especially if you've been avoiding horror for reasons pertaining to a certain group of people called heterosexuals. This is 100% a taste issue though and regardless of my personal preferences, I can still recognize the effort and skill that Bayron brought to this story. The ultimate twist of this book is pretty ridiculous. It's so over the top I could not take the story seriously and therefore nothing about it was scary.

I actually hope she remains in this YA Horror lane. I can feel she is a true fan of the genre and I would love to see what else she could create in this space. Theres also nothing that really hooked my interest, despite the premise being very exciting I found the story quite Boring! There's a lot of kids and names to follow which I didn't care about and teenage drama that always makes me struggle reading YA when it is a big part of the book. You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight is a solid effort in the YA Horror space for well-loved author, Kalynn Bayron.Thank you so much to the author and Bloomsbury YA for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review! I loved the entire cast of characters. Kalynn is always normalizes queerness and doesn’t make queerness the entirety of her character’s identities. Charity and her girlfriend Bezi are freaking adorable, and are just two girls who are in love and trying to be there for each other. Okay, Kaylnn Bayon is on a ROLL. Wow. So, earlier this year I read MY DEAR HENRY, which is a reimagining of “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde,” and it was amazing. (My daughter is currently reading and loving it.) Last year I read her middle grade debut, THE VANQUISHERS, and that one was excellent as well. Now, here she is again, taking on a completely new genre of writing with this book. Is there anything she can’t write? You’re Not Supposed to Die Tonight is an instant staple of the YA horror genre, with hair-raising twists and turns and a willingness to get into the gory murk of the terrors unfolding in the night. Keep your wits about you and do not trust anything or anyone.
